Resizing disk of a virtual machine with Fedora 23 installed fails with internal error

Last Updated: Jul 24, 2016 08:13PM UTC

Symptoms

Resizing disk of a virtual machine with Fedora 23 installed fails with the following or similar error:

# prl_disk_tool resize --hdd /var/parallels/VM_f3675372.pvm/harddisk.hdd --size 67580 --resize_partition
Resizing failed. An error occurred during the operation: internal error (0xffffffff80000001)

In /var/log/parallels.log following messages will appear:

01-13 13:47:10.367 I /imagetool:139918:139918/ Try to resize FS to 90865664

    01-13 13:47:10.828 F /imagetool:139918:139918/ Error : Failed to perform online XFS resize

Cause

Starting from release 22, Fedora is using XFS as a default filesystem. Fedora 22 is using XFS v4, which is supported and can be resized, however, starting from Fedora 23 XFS v5 is in use which is not yet supported by Virtuozzo 6.0 disk utilities.

One can check XFS version inside of a Virtual Machine by checking dmesg command output after the filesystem mount:

[root@f22 ~]# dmesg | grep XFS
[1804397.157298] SGI XFS with ACLs, security attributes, no debug enabled
[1804397.158793] XFS (sdb3): Mounting V4 Filesystem
[1804397.865501] XFS (sdb3): Ending clean mount

Alternatively, these logs can be found in journalctl output:

[root@f22 ~]# journalctl --no-pager | grep XFS
Jan 21 15:01:58 pvo.sw.ru kernel: SGI XFS with ACLs, security attributes, no debug enabled
Jan 21 15:01:58 pvo.sw.ru kernel: XFS (sdb3): Mounting V4 Filesystem
Jan 21 15:01:59 pvo.sw.ru kernel: XFS (sdb3): Ending clean mount

Note!: these commands should be executed inside of a Virtual Machine, not on a Virtuozzo side.

Resolution

Currently there is no solution or a workaround to this limitation. If resize functionality is critical it is recommended to re-partition the Virtual Machine using ext4 filesystem.
